Procedure for Requesting a Controlled Burn

With ongoing dry conditions, we want to remind residents that a burn ban remains in effect in Hunter, Kansas, until further notice. However, if you need to conduct a controlled burn within city limits, you must follow the proper approval process to ensure safety and compliance with local regulations.

Steps to Get Approval for a Controlled Burn

If you need to burn within city limits, you must receive approval before starting any fire. Follow these steps:

  1. Call the Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office (non-emergency line) at 785-738-2578 to request permission for a controlled burn.
  2. Provide your name and the address where the burn will take place.
  3. Be prepared to answer a few safety-related questions, including:
    • What materials you are burning.
    • Whether you have an adequate water source available in case the fire gets out of control.
  4. The Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office will then contact the City of Hunter Mayor for final approval.
  5. Once approval has been granted, the Sheriff’s Office will notify Lincoln County to inform them of the scheduled controlled burn.
  6. Lincoln County will then page out all fire personnel as a precautionary measure in case an emergency response is needed.

Why This Process is Important

This approval process ensures that all necessary departments are notified in advance and prepared to respond if needed. It also prevents unnecessary emergency calls and helps keep both residents and fire personnel safe.

Safety Reminders

  • Do NOT burn without official approval.
  • Always have water on hand to control the fire if needed.
  • Monitor wind conditions and avoid burning on high-wind days.
  • Never leave a fire unattended.

Failure to follow the proper approval process may result in fines or other penalties.

We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in keeping Hunter safe. For questions or concerns, please contact the Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office at 785-738-2578 or the City of Hunter for more information.
