Due to dry weather conditions and an increased risk of wildfires, the City of Hunter has issued a burn ban effective immediately. This ban aims to protect the safety of our residents, farmland, and surrounding areas during this period of elevated fire risk.
What the Burn Ban Means
The burn ban prohibits the following activities:
- Open burning of brush, grass, or trash
- Campfires and bonfires
- Burn barrels used for waste disposal
- Controlled burns on agricultural land
Exemptions:
- Grilling with gas or charcoal grills is allowed but must be supervised at all times.
We encourage residents to stay alert and follow these guidelines until further notice.
Why the Ban is Necessary
The combination of low rainfall, dry grasslands, and wind creates ideal conditions for wildfires, which can spread quickly and cause serious damage to crops, property, and homes. Protecting our town and surrounding farms is a priority, and the burn ban serves as a preventive measure to reduce these risks.
The Hunter Rural Fire Department will continue to monitor conditions and respond to any fire emergencies. We ask that residents remain vigilant and report any signs of smoke or fire immediately by dialing 911.
Tips for Staying Safe During the Ban
- Dispose of cigarette butts properly – do not throw them on the ground.
- Clear debris from around your home and outbuildings to reduce flammable material.
- Check weather forecasts before using any outdoor equipment that could generate sparks, such as mowers or welders.
- Educate your family and neighbors about the ban to ensure compliance and safety.
What Happens If the Burn Ban is Violated?
Violations of the burn ban could result in fines or other penalties, as unauthorized burning poses a serious risk to public safety. Please comply with these restrictions to avoid putting the community at risk.
