Welcome to Hunter, Kansas
Nestled in Mitchell County, Hunter, Kansas, is a small town with a rich past and a tight-knit community. Though our population may be small, our pride and heritage run deep. From the days of early settlers to our present as a resilient agricultural hub, Hunter’s story is one of determination, connection, and growth.
Rooted in the Past, Growing for the Future
From our agricultural beginnings to the unyielding spirit that shaped the town’s relocation, Hunter has always found ways to thrive. Though times have changed, our commitment to growth and community remains strong. Whether you’re exploring our history, attending a local event, or simply passing through, Hunter offers the warmth and connection of a community proud of its heritage and ready for the future.
Our History
The origins of Hunter trace back to the 1870s, when early settlers built sod houses and established their homes. Among these pioneers was Al Hunter, a key figure who set up a mercantile business that would later lend his name to our town. Initially located four miles from the present site, the town known as “Old Hunter” became a community hub thanks to its general store, hardware store, and post office.
In 1894, the Throwbridge Post Office opened on what is now modern-day Hunter. However, confusion between the two post offices—Throwbridge and Hunter—led to the consolidation of the name Hunter. This change ensured that residents would receive their mail without confusion.
The decision to relocate the town in 1916 marked a turning point. The Salina Northern Railroad extended its line to our new site, drawing businesses and residents from nearby Victor, Kansas, to move to Hunter. The town was officially chartered on March 1, 1916, and some of the original buildings from Old Hunter still stand today, including the current city office.

Hunter’s Community Today
We may be small, but the heart of Hunter beats with pride in our agricultural roots and a strong sense of community. Local businesses like the Hunter Café, Coop Elevator, and Hunter Gas Station serve as gathering spots, where residents connect and visitors experience our welcoming spirit. With the Hunter Library, Community Center, and Fire Department, we foster a spirit of service and togetherness.
Hunter Community Center
Our community center is a hub for events, meetings, and celebrations. Available for rental, it’s the perfect place to bring neighbors together for special moments.
School District
Hunter’s children attend schools within the Sylvan–Lucas USD 299 district, a legacy that began with the founding of Hunter High School in 1917. Although the high school has since merged with neighboring districts, the spirit of the “Hunter Huntsmen” lives on through community pride.

Our Historic Treasures
One of Hunter’s iconic landmarks is the Hunter Bank Building, originally the Victor State Bank from 1914. After moving to Hunter in 1917, the building served as a financial center until 2009. Today, the historic interior remains intact, offering visitors a glimpse into the past while also hosting events and lodging in newly converted spaces.
Another cherished part of our heritage is the legacy of Grace Chapel United Methodist and Trinity Lutheran Church, both of which have been pillars of faith for generations. These institutions embody the close-knit spirit that defines Hunter.
